Legend has it that when this rasha variety was divided for the first time, the bigger piece was sold for 800,000 yen (about $5,100 at today's exchange rate) and the smaller piece for 750,000 yen (about $4,800 at today's exchange rate). Fortunately for us, this cultivar develops lots of baby shoots, so the price has come down quite a bit. It is now the "rasha gem for beginners." Its beauty is none the less for their current affordability, though.

This plant has clear shima (stripes). Some prefer 'Zuisen' with fukurin only, others prefer 'Zuisen' with shimafukurin, so it is purely a matter of taste, but there clearly are fewer of those with shimafukurin, so if you are a fan of 'Zuisen,' enjoy growing the shimafukurin version.

A baby shoot is coming out, so this plant can be divided into two plants in the future.
