'Matsutani Chiyoda,' which, despite 'Chiyoda' in its name, is a registered cultivar with no variegation that manifests kouryu, nimenryu, or gashiryu (single, double, or multiple lengthwise ridge[s]). What makes it so famous is the fact that such masterpieces of the Chiyoda variety as 'Iwaida no Matsu,' 'Sankou no Matsu,' 'Chiyoda no Matsu,' 'Hiide no Matsu,' and 'Mizuho no Matsu' all descended from this cultivar. Since they are seedlings from this cultivar, they are no longer 'Matsutani Chiyoda,' but may develop the above-mentioned hagei (mutations of leaf shape), and/or, since they are already showing variegation, may turn out to be good Chiyoda varieties (with white, lengthwise streaks, or green streaks against white back ground).
